Motorcycle Windshields Article from Bellevue Suzuki Kawasaki

If you’re looking for a low-cost upgrade with big dividends, then you should consider a motorcycle windshield! We’ve created a guide to understanding this great customization below. If you decide to upgrade, bring your motorcycle to Bellevue Suzuki Kawasaki. You’ll find us in Memphis, Tennessee.

Why are Windshields Important?

Windshields act as a protective barrier between you and the things you encounter on the road. It blocks bugs, spray from other motorists, and kicked-up debris from hitting your body or your clothes. The negative effects of weather, like rain and wind, are reduced. Your riding endurance is improved since the windshield reduces wind fatigue. All these benefits make your ride more enjoyable and more comfortable.

The Types of Windshields

The first category of windshields is the type of installation (permanent or removable). The permanent option, also called fixed mounted, only requires one installation. If you are confident in the type of windshield you want, this option can be the most convenient. The removable option, also called quick-release, allows you to pop off the windshield when you don’t need it. Take it off on clear sunny days when you need less coverage. Remove it for easy transportation or storage. Switch between windshield types depending on your needs for that ride. If you want more flexibility, this option can be the best fit.

Another way to categorize windshields is by the material they are made of. The most common is acrylic, largely because it is the cheapest choice. It also looks shinier and won’t yellow over time. The downsides are that it more easily scratches and more easily shatters on impact. Polycarbonate is more durable (can be up to 20 times more impact-resistant than common acrylic options). It’s often used in everything from helmet face shields to race car windows. It’s harder to chip because of how flexible it is. But scratches cannot be buffed out and it will yellow over time.

A third category of windshields is tinted or not tinted. The default option is not tinted, but you can find tinted options. Some level of tint can make it easier to see in the sun and can reduce headlight glare at night. Too much tint can reduce visibility in low-light settings. There are even colored tint options to showcase your personality. Before you buy a tint option, check with local and state laws (these sometimes have restrictions).

Deciding to Upgrade

A windshield is a small investment with big returns. Anyone can enjoy the benefits. But anyone who rides often or rides for extended periods of time should heavily consider a windshield.

Really the only people who might not benefit are those who own a rare or vintage motorcycle. A windshield will decrease its aesthetic value, which isn’t worth it on a motorcycle you don’t ride often.

Maintaining a Windshield

A windshield is a low-maintenance upgrade. Wash it often to get debris, mud, and bugs off. Make sure you don’t scrub too hard (otherwise you can scratch the surface). If something is caked on, place a soapy towel on it for a few minutes. This will loosen up the debris so you can gently wipe it off.
